"Getting to Know All About You"
The endangered species introduction.
Howard Waterman
1991 Woodrow Wilson Biology Institute
Objective:
To get students to learn each other's name and at the same time get them familiar with some common endangered species.
(Please note that the list of species categorized as "Endangered" changes over time. Thus some of the species listed as "Endangered" in this activity--written in 1991-- may no longer be included in this
category. By updating the list prior to use, the activity remains, however, a
useful introduction both to members of the class, and to some endangered
species.)"
Procedure:
Students' names are written on cards which have been cut out. Without the student watching, their name and the name of an endangered species is placed on their back with tape.
Students go about the room asking ONLY one question of each other as to what characteristics their animal has. They are to ask the question in a "Yes" "No" form and precede the question with the other student's name. That is, "John, does my animal have wings?". After students have had sufficient time to ask questions of many students, they are asked to share with the class what their "best" guess is. Whether right or not is of little importance. They can then remove their tags and discover if they were right in their hypothesis. Then pose the question, "What do all these animals have in common?" - students may not be able to identify that these are all endangered species and a good discussion can focus on many other characters and the final solution.
