Introduction
Biotechnology encompasses both research and industry. New pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and environmental technologies are being developed at a phenomenal rate. I would like you to become familiar with what a biotechnology company does, what you would need to do to be an employee, and how anyone can be involved--as an investor. In order to do this, we will be doing the following activities:
Part I: Keeping an Investment Portfolio
Complete parts A and B on the following pages in order to compare the earnings of investors in various companies.
Part II: Requesting Information from Your Company
After researching your company online, write a letter to your chosen biotechnology company identifying yourself, school, and class; the purpose of writing to the company (what are you requesting); and the address to which you want the materials sent.
Part III: Preparing a Display
On one 22" x 28" poster board (one or both sides), prepare an attractive display that contains the following:
- Location, # of employees, background of workers
- What the company does--what type of research it does; what kinds of products it markets; why it researches or markets particular products
- Explain any uncommon terms or procedures
- A graphical display of the value of the company's stock from September to May (computer generated)
Points to consider: Your display should be colorful, neat, grammar and spelling checked, visually appealing, and have informative lettering approximately 24 point or larger.
Part IV: Seminar
Share the information on your poster with the rest of the class. You should be able to speak with no notes other than prompts from your poster; in other words you should know your material well.
Time should be approximately 10 minutes and if more than one person is involved, both should have an active part in the presentation.
Points to consider: During your presentation you should: be audible, knowledgeable, able to respond to questions, interact with your audience and pronounce words correctly.

PART A: Comparing Biotechnology and Other Companies.
Choose one biotechnology company (Genentech) and two other companies listed in the daily paper's stock exchange section. Given $1000 to invest in each of the three companies, keep a record of the value of your investment over the course of the year.
Wall Street Online: (http://www.wso.com) will give you connections to look up stock symbols, get quotes, and get information on companies such as addresses, products, etc. Another related address is (http://www.dbc.com/cgi-bin/htx.exe/forms/quote.html). For both, "fast quotes" will give you a quote, and "market guide report" will give you company information. Another source of quotes can be found at (http://www.quote.com).

PART B: Investing in a Biotechnology Company. Given $1000 to invest, choose (highlight it ) one other biotechnology company and keep a record of the value of your investment over the course of the year. You will also need to find out if your company has a web page and to write to the company for information. You can find other biotechnology companies listed on the internet at (http://www.bio.org), the Biotechnology Industries and Organizations home page.
