Activity Description of "Zoophyla"

Title Zoophyla
Audience Grades 9-12, Biology, Advanced Biology
Abstract Oh, how to teach the end of the year when you have everything else (the whole animal kingdom) to cover and everyone is tired of listening to you? I have devised an animal phyla symposium/presentation where my students teach each other the various phyla. We have PowerPoint software and a digital camera available in our science tech lab and I have incorporated the use of this for their presentations. You can simply edit the file and change it to whatever meets your needs. I have also included a grading rubric. I also do a dichotomous key animal ID lab between all these presentations, which helps the hands-on learners. It can be done either through keying and identifying specimens and writing their characteristics, or by more of an inquiry -problematic approach. In this students group similar specimens together, investigate words to describe the characteristics they share, and create their own dichotomous key. Enjoy :-) Rosie
