Darwin Day Celebration Activities

Rich Benz, Wickliffe High School

The linked files will help you celebrate Darwin Day with your biology students. Every year the students at Wickliffe High in Ohio forget about old Abe Linclon for a few minutes and celebrate the birth of one of our greatest scientists--Charles R. Darwin, born February 12, 1809 (the same exact day as Abe.) To help recognize the contributions to biology and all scientific thought we have a day long celebration. I give each student an explorers "field bag" filled with things Darwin might have seen on his trip aroud the world on the H.M.S. Beagle. I put jelly beans to represent Blue Footed Boobie eggs, gummy animals to remind the students of the diversity of life he observed, and so on. While they are "exploring" the field bags I show some of my own "home" movies of the Galapagos Islands and the Audubon video My Fragile World about photographer Tui De Roi. The celebration is announced to the whole school and I put posters all around my school proclaiming Feb. 12 a real holiday. Have fun with the enclosed ideas and add some of your own.
