Competition Rules

The competition has ended. Listed below are the competition rules for the 1997 competition.

You have the opportunity to participate in a competition to solve a portion of the Arctica mystery at the end of each episode (1 through 3). Complete the form found at the end of each episode, then use the Submit Competition Entry button to submit your entry. Your entry must include the answer to the question found at the end of the episode and an explanation of the solution.

Submission Categories

  • Individual (grades 9-12)
  • Classroom (grades 9-12)

Only one entry is allowed per individual or classroom --so please think carefully before submitting! Once submitted, your entry cannot be revoked or canceled.

Entries can be submitted by anyone, but prizes will only be awarded to individuals and classes in grades 9-12.

Prize winners will be selected randomly from all the correct competition entries at the end of each episode. Prize-winning contestants must be able to provide verifiable school name and address, e-mail or phone number, grade level, and school sponsor (for classroom entries) in order to qualify for prizes.

To be eligible for a prize you must submit your entry before the deadline. The deadlines are:

  • Episode One: Tuesday, October 21, 5:00 p.m. (PST)
  • Episode Two: Tuesday, October 28, 5:00 p.m. (PST)
  • Episode Three: Tuesday, November 4, 5:00 p.m. (PST)

Five prize winners will be randomly selected from all correct Classroom entries for each episode. Classroom entry prizes include a Genentech T-shirt, mousepad and poster and a class set of "DNA Fingerprint" bookmarks.

Five prize winners will be randomly selected from all correct Individual competition entries for each episode. Individual entry prizes include Genentech posters, T-shirts and bookmarks.

Grand Prize Drawing

At the completion of the Arctica online mystery, one grand prize Classroom winner and one grand prize Individual winner will be randomly selected from all correct competition entries from all three episodes. Correct entries must be in grades 9-12 to be eligible for the grand prize drawing. The grand prize CLASSROOM winner will receive $1,000 and the grand prize INDIVIDUAL winner will receive $250!

You don't have to be on any of the winner's lists to win the Grand Prize. You just need to have submitted a correct answer, as an individual or a classroom, for one of the episodes.

Announcement of Winners

Five correct individual and classroom entrants for each episode will have their names posted on the Arctica website.
