Rabies?
"The man they dunked in the water," you say. "It's pretty
clear he had rabies."
"But he's not one of the five," William says. "They consigned
his body to the deep."
"You think he spread rabies to the others?" Claudia thinks
it over. "The symptoms aren't right. Rabies causes symptoms much more
obvious than a fever."
"Also, three people got fever and lived," William goes
on. "I think there are only three cases of people surviving rabies in
all of human history."
"It's that deadly?" Claudia asks.
William nods. "I do believe there's a different answer,"
he says thoughtfully. He pulls out his piece of paper.
"You keep jotting on that," Claudia observes.
"Are you ever going to twig us what it's about?"
"It's a chart," William says. "A chart
of the mystery." He lays it on the table, and you and Claudia crowd
around him for a look.
