The riverman cuts his engine and noses the boat into
the bank. "Here?" you ask. It's a tangle of jungle just
like everywhere else.
He nods and tosses your bag out onto a bare patch
of ground. The beginning of a path, you realize. You
step cautiously out of the boat. After the roar of the
outboard engine, the jungle seems fiercely silent.

The engine sputters into life again. "Bzz bzz!" the
man calls. The boat spins and heads off downstream.
In less than a minute you can no longer hear it. Like
the sun, the sky, the land and everything else, it has
been swallowed up by the Amazon jungle.
