Clara meets his look with a fierce one of her own. "I talked with Doctor
Hernandez, in the village. She told me a bug bit her on the lip, and
she put it on a pin, and she was going into shock, and she barely managed
to give herself epinephrine. She assured me it was not the bees that
made her all red and swollen like that."
Clara glares at Jorge. "But of course that is just exactly what she
would say. So I come here -- and look." She sweeps her hand over the
hundreds of dead bees. "She's trying to cover up that these bees are
out of control."
"But what she told you is the truth," you hear yourself saying. "We
found the bug on the pin. And there were no stingers in her when we
found her."
"So it was the bug," Jorge muses. "One little kissing bug." But Clara
is not convinced.
"That doesn't explain all the dead bees on the floor," she argues.
"Look at them all!"
"That?"
Jorge taunts her. "That is nothing. Look at this!" And
with a flourish he slams open the door of Hive Number One.
