But now we're getting another wave of invasions, which aren't so benign. The star thistle, which is now taking over the California grasslands, is not benign. It's devaluing the range lands. Then there's a sad story of purposeful introductions causing extinctions, things that we brought in on purpose to do a job using the best knowledge that we had at the time. The mongoose was brought in to control rats in the sugar cane fields in many of the islands. Unfortunately, it drove many birds to extinction as well as small animals.


Good intent
Many other things were introduced purposefully: crab grass, as a potential seed; water hyacinth, a beautiful flower;



kudzu vine for erosion control,




water fern for aquaria.

For every one of these, thought was given to how we could help society by bringing in these particular organisms. Kudzu vine does do erosion control but it also can overtop the canopies of the trees in the southeast United States.
