The earliest history of the earth suggests...

If we go back and we look at the earliest history of the earth, it was a pretty rough neighborhood. Much of the crust may not have even solidified. It may have been assaulted by a great deal of space trash crashing into the surface, by lightning storms, by the nearby moon that has presumably just been created by the impact of a very large object blasting off the portion of the earth and forming the moon. At this point, there is no land life.

At about 3.5-3.8 billion years ago, we begin to see the first signs of life. What were these earliest organisms? They were bacteria, Prokaryotic, simple minded, little single celled organisms such as today often survive in very harsh environments like hot springs. Indeed, we might, if we only wanted to push things slightly, claim that the first land life was formed by bacteria living in hot springs in a terrestrial sphere. Pretty dull though, nothing like what Karl was talking about.
