Distinguishing Bacterial vs. Yeast Colonies

This is for those of you who are teachers which is the entire audience. If you ever get something growing on an agar plate, that looks kind of like a bacterium, but your not sure if the colony is a bacterium or yeast. I have a quick way for you to distinguish bacterial colonies from yeast colonies. If you place the plate upside down under low power (10 x) of a microscope, look at the edge of the colony, and if you see individual cells at the edge of the colony, I guarantee you, you have a yeast. That's very quick. That's just a little expertise type of thing to tell you. Try it out sometime.
