Pharmaceutical Industry's Approach to
  Help Resolve the Problem

  • Identify the primary targets as those representing the toughest antibiotic-resistant pathogens currently seen in the clinic.

  • Focus on developing agents which are effective against the most highly and broadly resistant organisms, i.e. those presenting the greatest medical need.
    (pen/mac-R St.pneumoniae, MRSA, and Enterococcus faecalis/faecium)

  • Conduct basic research to recognize emerging mechanisms of resistance before they become a clinical problem.
