An Introduction to Microbiotic Crusts...

Now what I want to do in the talk today is introduce you to microbiotic crusts and tell you why I think these communities are so neat and why they are ecologically important. So I'll give you a short definition and tell you their ecological importance, as well as give general background information based on my and other people's studies. Then I'm going to talk about some of our reclamation efforts. In the last five years I've been working especially on developing reclamation technologies for when these microbiotic crusts become disturbed. So, since the Academy wants me to talk about my research, that's the part of my research that I'm going to spend most of my time on.

Finally, since I'm coming to California I want to tell you that I am working in California in the Mojave and I thought that since many of you are Californians you would like to hear some of that information as well.
