A Simple Approach...
But then there's a very simple way to approach this. This is a schematic that gives you an idea of DNA damage. Now, DNA damage can occur in different forms. You can actually break the DNA but most of the common damage is stuff we call photoproducts. There are several kinds of photoproducts. Some photoproducts can be repaired with an enzyme called photolyase. So, what we are suggesting here, is that where you have increased amounts of DNA synthesis, it has absolutely nothing to do with any of those factors. Instead, what we are suggesting is that the damage is being repaired by a mechanisms called excision repair. If that is true it's absolutely stunning because we're showing an enormous amount of DNA synthesis going to repair UV damage. This organism has been around for a good long time in all its forms. Perhaps there's something wrong with our ideas.
