Concluding thoughts...
I've kind of gone over my time here so I'll just conclude with a paper I read a long time ago by Michael Soule. It was entitled the Millennium Ark. He talked about the demographic effects of the human population. Even if human population growth was to level off at zero population growth right now, each person replacing only himself; due to the fact that there are so many younger people the population will continue to grow and we're going to continue to destroy habitat for other species for maybe another 200 years. He talked about ways or ideas to try to maintain biodiversity through this period which could be called the demographic winter. Large reserves like these I've talked about may be a type of Ark - a Millennium Arc - that we can develop.
So this is what we're trying to do in the relatively undisturbed landscape of the Northern Rockies. And then after lunch Dr. Sterling will talk about efforts in areas of the world that are already very heavily populated. Thank you.
Now you've got to write down the population number from the java applet of population growth and see how many people have been added. (about 9,000 people were added to the population of the planet during this lecture)
