European hunting preserves:
Similar hunting preserves were established in Europe during the Middle Ages but few of them were large enough or persisted long enough to maintain large predators, although I've been told that the only remaining tract of ancient forest left in Poland was part of a hunting preserve. There are still wolves that live in that area. Even in modern times animals have been maintained on hunting preserves. In Romania, the dictator Ceaucescou kept large tracts of land for hunting European Brown or what we call Grizzly Bears. Romania still has the largest population of Brown Bears in Europe. There are estimates of anywhere from 6-10,000.
