One of my favorite pictures is of John Muir and John Burrows, two classic nineteenth century, early twentieth century naturalists, one from the east and one from the west but they were good friends. They spent a lot of time together in Alaska and elsewhere.
Naturalists and biologists and ecologists have worked for the preservation of nature for decades but "conservation biology" per se is a relatively new discipline. I was talking to a friend, an Italian friend of mine who teaches at the University of Rome just a couple of days ago about this presentation and he said he *felt 1980 was a reasonably good date. That's the date of the publication of the first book titled "Conservation Biology". So as a discrete science, it really hasn't existed that long.
