Blueberry pancakes and site identification...
In order to undertake the study of what plants and animals were in that area, we had 11 museum scientists teaming with 13 Vietnamese scientists for a two month expedition to these regions in April and May of last year. As you can imagine, the logistics of this kind of expedition are daunting, with 24 different scientists arriving and departing at different times and with various government officials and support staff in these three different camps. Unfortunately, that's my job, to make sure everybody gets blueberries with their pancakes, so it can be a little bit of a headache but most definitely worth the while.
The team of scientists working on this project uncovered absolutely incredible information about the three sites. Several species seen during the survey had never been recorded from Vietnam, whereas others had not been seen since the 1930's. Clearly, there's a lot of work to be done in Vietnam in terms of understanding better the distribution of species within the country and which is what exactly we're trying to detect.
