Another reason Vietnam has lost its forest cover was also to supply post-war lumbering operations such as rebuilding schools, homes, and hospitals. Habitat fragmentation and deforestation, local markets, and international markets in plants and animal species threaten what remains of Vietnam's biodiversity.
Deforestation resulting from the traditional agricultural methods and the more recent construction boom are actions generated by humans and are products of perceived needs, aspirations, and necessities. Understanding the root causes of these anthropogenic threats to biodiversity is important to any effort to conserve Vietnam's biodiversity.
