Sam Taylor, Ph.D.

Samuel M. Taylor, Ph.D.
Chairman and Curator, Department of Education,
California Academy of Sciences

Samuel McElroy Taylor has pursued an interdisciplinary career in the natural sciences and museum interpretation. Dr. Taylor received his Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986 and his M.A. from the Marine Science Institute, University of California, Santa Barbara in 1978. Trained as a marine biologist and a science educator, he applies this experience to communicate science to the general public through museum exhibitions, educational programs, scholarly publishing, television and interactive media. He is currently Chairman and Curator of the education department at the California Academy of Sciences. Prior to coming to the Academy, he was Director of Exhibitions at the American Museum of Natural History from 1990 until 1996. He oversaw planning, development, and maintenance of permanent and temporary exhibitions. He was awarded an NSF grant for over $1 million for ³Global Warming² and another NSF grant for over $2 million for ³Biodiversity.² From 1986 to 1990, Taylor was Biology Director at New York Hall of Science. From 1983 to 1986, Taylor was a Program Specialist in the education department of the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. Taylor is also editor of Curator: The Museum Journal, a quarterly publication of the California Academy of Sciences.
