Acid Snow/Acid Rain Project

Goals

  1. To have teachers involved in a collaborative project which is fun.

  2. To have students of these teachers volunteer to collect acid rain or acid snow.

  3. To identify your location by latitude and longitude, so that students can plot that information on a map of the United States.

  4. To transmit average pH collected from the site to the central source-web page on a weekly basis February 7,14,21, and 28.

  5. To have students at individual schools plot average data by day to determine if lines -iso pH lines- exist.

  6. To communicate with other schools thaat are participating in the project.

  7. To decide whether this project is feasible to continue with at a future date, or as a longitudinal study.

  8. To encourage others to participate in a project like this or continue with this one at a future date.

Protocol For Acid Rain/Acid Snow

Place a jar (Mason/Peanut Butter) or one of similar size at a location three feet above the ground in order to prevent splash back and contamination. A ziploc bag is placed ino the jar and held in place by a rubber band. The collection container should be kept out of the rain shadow of the home or any other high object. This means that it is away from the object as that oject is high. Care should be taken not to collect in low lying areas or near streams.

Collection time should be set at the same time each day so that if it rains or snows, consistency is established. We collect on the days that it rains or snows between 6:30 to 7:00 am and bring the samples to school trying to maintain the same temperature as the outdoors from which it came.The best testing is to test right on site but this is the procedure we use. The purpose of this is to maintain the carbon dioxide level since its loss changes the pH.

On the weekends the acid rain and snow can be stored in the refrigerator until it can be brought to school to be tested. The acid snow should be allowed to melt at room temperture with the ziploc closed so that carbon dioxide does not escape and thereby affect the pH reading. Testing will be accomplished with narrow range pH paper
.
