Crickets As Thermometers
Using The Spreadsheet Function
The data was provided in degrees Fahrenheit.
Suppose you wanted to convert the data to degrees Celsius. The
conversion formula is °C=5/9 (°F-32)
- Clear list 3.
- Arrow up so that L3 is highlighted.
- Type 5÷9(2nd L1-32).
- Press ENTER
List 3 shows all the temperatures in °C. Although we
will not use that information in this exercise, it shows how the
spread sheet function can be used.
Another explanation
Let us say you used a probe to measure the
respiration rate of some insects. If you measured the mass of
the insects (let us say it was 5 grams), you could determine the
respiration rate per gram by clearing a list and simply typing
the name of the list that contains the respiration rates (let
us say list 2) and dividing by 5. Then press enter. The spreadsheet
is a very useful tool for data analysis.
