    Advisory board research conducted through review of literature, interviews with local, state, and national portfolio practitioners.
Development
    Advisory board and classroom portfolio field test conducted. Portfolio goals surveys sent to California science teachers.

    Generalized parameters and goals of GSE Science Portfolio developed.


    1992 - 1993


Research
    Portfolio trials conducted by 150 California science teachers.
Development
    Portfolio goals and criteria revised; scoring guides developed; student exemplars selected.
Products
    Portfolio guidebook published; all student work scored and included in 1993 final GSE scores; research results reported on test component correlations, inter-rater reliability comparisons, and gender/ethnicity performance comparisons.

1993 - 1994


Research
    Opportunity to learn effects on portfolio outcomes, effects of portfolio experience on other GSE science scores, and effects of teacher background and portfolio experience on student performance researched.
Development
    Portfolio guidebook revised to streamline classroom implementation; 6-level performance standards developed to accommodate diversity in student work; 150 new and returning teachers participate.
Products
    Research results reported; local institutionalization of portfolio established to ease financial and travel burden to teachers and districts.

1994 - 1995


Development
    Portfolio guidelines, implementation tips, and research questions refined by over 200 new and returning participants.
