The Access Excellence Periodic Tableau

Our roving reporters collared unsuspecting Fellows for off-the-cuff, "Hominid in the Hall" interviews. As a reward they got to dig into the Hominid Grab Bag for rare and unusual prizes.

Q:When did you first know you would want to be a teacher?

A:I first knew when I was a camp counselor starting at age 13-14.

Q:Will you be using ethnobotany in your school?

A:Yes. We have a horticultural dept. in our school. Among the horticultural teacher, my co-teacher and myself, we'll be looking at student investigation projects, among other things.

Q:If you could be a piece of technology, what would you be?

A:A pen-- because technology is basically communications, and as a calligrapher, I still prefer the pen to the computer. The pen is prettier than an electron!

Cleveland HS, Portland, OR

Q:When did you first know you would want to be a teacher?

A: I didn't want to be a teacher! After teaching in the peace corps, I needed a job, so looked at teaching. But as an intern, I really got into it and liked it. That's when I knew I wanted to be a teacher.

Q:Will you be using ethnobotany in your school?

A:Where there are cattails, I may show them how to make a rope, how to use the resources at hand. We'll be comparing native plants to non-indigenous plants that have been introduced. So yes, we will be using ethnobotany soon!

Lake View HS, Chicago, IL

Q:When did you first know you would want to be a teacher?

A:When you are in 8th grade, you are asked to write down what you wanted to be, and I wrote down "a teacher." I went to HS and I loved my physiology class, sticking my fingers in all the heart valves, and running around with a frog tongue. When I went back to my 10 year reunion, I was the only person from my 8th grade class who was what they said they were going to be!

Q:Will you be using ethnobotany in your school?

A:Perhaps I'll bring in herbs, have students smell and touch them, perhaps make some tea. I love Bach flowers -- if you prepare them for patients who are having psychological problems, it helps overcome mental blocks.
