Terminators: Wordplays for Ideas & Insights
Ethanol
Ethanol is grain alcohol. The word comes from the Latin 'aether' from the
Greek 'ethyl' or 'ather,' akin to 'aithein' meaning to ignite. So when
cowboys in old Westerns call whiskey "firewater" it makes sense two ways:
alcohol really burns (as in alcohol lamps and in gasohol) and it burns when
swallowed.
