Oxygen

Oxygen comes from the French 'oxygene,' from the Greek 'oxys' meaning acidic or sharp. 'Oxys' is akin to the Latin 'acere'. From an organic chemistry point of view, oxygen is the element that "generates acid." For example, the difference between ethanol and acetic acid is an extra oxygen. An oxymoron, on the other hand, literally means pointedly foolish from 'oxys' and 'moros'.
