I'd like to say to any of you
contemplating a career in the biological sciences, I have the
following comments. It is tough and competitive. If you are
intelligent and energetic you have a chance at being successful,
i.e. you'll get a Ph.D. and a job and funding. The biomedical
sciences which is in the throes of unimaginable advances, has to be
one of the thrills in the career of any scientist. One additional perk
that accrues to scientific career is the opportunity to practice
science with colleagues from all over the world. I salute all of my
collaborators whom I have not had the time to acknowledge and to whom
I owe so much.
I will leave you with a
comment of a colleague, Professor Gordon Tomkins, who shortly before
his premature death expressed the opinion that to have experienced and
participated in the beginnings of molecular biology and biotechnology
was the greatest privilege he could imagine.
There are certainly more frontiers to be explored and
enjoy and I wish you good luck.
