I would like to share my personal perspective about some of the events that led to the discovery of methods of transplanting genes. These events were the result of basic scientific studies of natural phenomena rather than any intent to invent genetic engineering.

My role in this discovery stemmed from efforts to understand the biology of plasmids, miniature chromosomes that have the remarkable ability to make bacteria resistant to drugs and chemicals that ordinarily inhibit their growth.
