Well, the events I have described are the scientific equivalent of ancient history. In the almost 20 yrs that have passed since the first DNA cloning experiment, these procedures have become a routine tool in virtually every area of the biological and chemical sciences.
In closing I want to remind you that science isn't done in a vacuum. The work I have talked about depended on the fruits of many years of effort in laboratories throughout the world. As with most scientific discoveries, one can say with some certainty that if Boyer and I had not collaborated to clone DNA in early 1973, DNA cloning would have been achieved later by other labs, probably approaching the objective from a different perspective.
Sometimes I have looked back and wondered what the course of events would have been if the great love of science that Herb Boyer and I shared had not also been accompanied by a predilection toward overstuffed corn beef sandwiches.
