This is the plant gun, it weighs about 75 pounds and does not fit conveniently in your pocket -- but it does work on the principle of shooting a projectile into the plant. It's about a 22 caliber shell.
So, the whole operation looks like this: you start out with plant cells in culture, you fire your gun with a coated bullet on it or you put in Agrobacterium and you regenerate those cells to start forming plants and as it gets bigger you transfer them to get bigger plants and you put them in a pot and eventually they flower and, if you're lucky, the DNA has gotten in there and your plant is resistant.
So, we can then achieve our goal and, indeed, many such plants have been created putting the gene for resistance into the chromosomes and making resistant plants.
